With the installation of DLink wireless router I lost my system tray icons.
Is there any way other than re-installing the programs involved to get those
icons back.

Examples of lost icons: Anit virus suite Shield icon, sound icon, Nvidia
control centre icon, C Media 3d Audio icon and a few others.

Any help will be gratefully received.

Hi Ron,

See this by MS-MVP Kelly Theriot:

'Why don't my Notification Area icons show or why do they disappear?'
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/top10faqs.htm

Thanks for the link to the download. I have it and have taken a look at it.
There is a check box that I am not sure about when running the program and I
will check with my son-in-law (a networking specialist) the next time that I
see him before letting the program make the changes indicated as I'm not at
all sure what the affected items do.

Thank you

Yes, they appear to be running.

I may have stumbled upon the solution to the missing System
Tray/Notification Tray. I went through my BIOS settings and changed the
boot order so that the System Drive was first on the list. It was set-up
before so that the floppy was checked first followed by the CDr and then the
Hard Drives. This was a dual boot machine before and the first hard drive
listed was the C drive and then the D drive which is now where XP resides
and is my only operating system.

I changed the order of operations to D drive first as it is now the system
drive, C drive second, CDr drive third and the floppy last. So far,
everything appears to be operating normally.

The whole tray is missing?
The only thing that would show up was the clock until I changed the boot
order in the BIOS. I don't know why that would change anything but it did
and continues to work showing icons for all programs that should be shown in
the tray.

It does seem odd but I have been watching how the computer boots (visually)
and it is quite different with the different order of boot devices for
reasons that I don't know.

Before making the change to the boot order of devices, it did appear that
all services that normally appeared in the Notification Area were in fact
running but there was no way to access the icons in order to access the
features that those icons contained. The control over my anti-virus is one
example.

There is a lot more disk activity after the desktop is fully presented than
there was before but the total time of booting is roughly the same as
before.

I think that this solution should fall under the heading "If all Else Fails,
Try This"

I've seen this happen when connecting a router (wireless or wired.)
This seems to be caused by UPNP service. I've turned my router's UPNP
service off and made sure that XP's UPNP service is also off. All my
icons returned to their positions in my system tray.
