I contacted compaq because I lost my sound, even though my speakers turn on,
and I also lost my volume icon. After going through different tests I was
told to download WINMM WDM Audio Capability Drive and I received a message
stating that it cannot be downloaded because it has not passed logo testing.
It also said when I tried to dowload Media that there was an error.
Compaq suggested that I call microsoft. Mocrosoft suggested I use newsgroups.
Can somebody tell me how I can download WINMM successfully without hurting
my computer.

By "WINMM WDM Audio Capability Drive", do you mean DRIVER? Did you click
"Save" instead of "Run", on the download screen? Did you read the info on How
to Install the Driver, while on the compaq web site?
And, what is "Media"? Need more info.
Please supply the Make/Model# of your computer, also.
[Example- Compaq Presario 3820]

It is a Presario Model no. SR 1010NX. I did both I tried it with save and
tried with run. I was being guided by a tech from Compaq so I did as he said
and he was the one said that it is a microsoft problem.

Try the procedure in the next paragraph. Please report back if it works
or not.

Open the "Sounds and Audio Devices Properties" applet in your Windows XP
control panel. Look for a tab containing a check box for including the
volume control icon on the task bar. IF the box IS checked uncheck it
and close the applet with the "OK" button. Open the "Sounds..." applet
again to activate the volume control icon. Sometimes toggling the icon
off and then back on reestablishes it.

The Compaq tech is neglecting the fact that the COMPUTER MANUFACTURERS
agree to support the operating system for customers who purchase OEM
Windows licenses! Most name brand computers come with OEM Windows
licenses. Microsoft is still responsible for supporting full Retail and
Upgrade licenses.

Note that either the OEM or Microsoft has the OPTION to want payment for
support provided after the end of the applicable warranty period.
