approx every 24 hours my system dumps the restore points
created either manually or by the system

the last error meassage fron event viewer was as below.
'The system restore filter encountered the enexpected
error0xC0000034' while processing the file access.cpl on
the volume Harddisk colume 1. it has stopped monitoring
the volume.

The file appears to be irrelvant as it could be any file

All the settings appeat to be correct, and the disk
appears to be ok after a chkdsk or defrag

any ideas anyone.

This article in particular talks about the filters for system restore:

If you have another XP machine available, you might want to compare the
contents of its registry keys (specifically the ones listed in the above
article) to the registry keys on the computer that is having trouble
hanging onto restore points.

When I allowed System Restore to monitor all of my hard drives, I ran into
a problem with it suspending whenever I moved a large number of monitored
file types. To avoid that, I now monitor the Windows partition only. The
partitions that I use to download setup files, drivers etc are not
monitored.

Try this first. It is the easiest & sometimes fixes system restore
problems:
Go into system restore and turn it off. It is easy to find the way
to do that. Once you shut it off, it will access your hard drive and
it will take a little time deleting stuff. Then after that, just to
make sure, turn off your computer & turn it on again (wait a half
minute, but a reboot is probably fine too). Then go back in there and
turn back on the system restore.

Also, check the slider bar there as to how much disk space is allotted
to system restore. If you have a big hard drive, the default 12 % or
whatever it is, is way too much. 2 gigs aught to be more than you
need..

Then make it do a forced restore point that you engage. Then see if
it still is there in over 24 hours.

That didn't work for me. I did all of that and still don't
have any restore points. :o(

If you ever turned of system restore and then turned it back on they are
gone!!!
Once you turn of system restore on a dirve all restore points previously
established are deleted.

Doesn't matter what I do, I can only ever get today's restore
point (if I've made one).

Not arguing that, Jamess. The guy doesn't have any restore points
anyway. The same thing happened to me. Or rather, I had restore
points but the computer would not restore any of them.

The only time I experienced having restore points and not being able to
restore them was after I had restored my system with Norton Ghost. Once the
restore/clone was completed the restore point present at the time of the
backup were restored also, but they would not work.
