MS seems to have generated a great catch-22 situation.
I've lost my registration number in the process of
transferring XP from my old machine to my new machine.
Used the same HD, but the new machine won't recognize that
XP was there. I attempted to re-install, but of course it
wants the reg number that they must check every time they
upgrade me. They want to know the number - or charge me
$35. Any suggestions?

If this is a retail version of XP, the Product Key is on a sticker which is
affixed to the CD case.

If this is an OEM version of XP, it is only licensed to the first system
that it is installed on and cannot be transferred to another system.

Charlie;
Microsoft did not lose the Product Key so they did not create a
situation.

Look for the orange sticker on the case the CD was enclosed, that has
the Product Key.
If windows XP is retail contact Microsoft
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=326246

If Windows XP is OEM, look for a 1" x 3" sticker affixed to the
computer
Or contact the seller, Microsoft may not be able to help with OEM.
