Lost program taskbar buttons

Not sure what happened, but suddenly the taskbar has no
buttons on it for the open programs. Any ideas? And I'm
not talking about the quicklaunch buttons...

Rightclick taskbar/Properties/Customize/Behavior

column. You have 3 choices for the icons.
 
thanks, but thats the notification area. The taskbar
area I am trying to describe is between the Start button
and the icon area in the lower right end of the taskbar.
