hello, I posted a little bit ago that my coworker had lost his profile using
WIN2000 and he had lost all his files. I posted it in Win XP newsgroups, and
eventhough the answers really helped, I want to ask somehting else and this
time in the correct newsgroup.

He lost his profile again. I had to install everything again, set up the
internet, outlook and recuperate his old files that were under documents and
settings (thank you to an answer from WIN XP group!).
I run ad-aware, Norton 2006 or 2008 (right now I dont remember which one it
is installed), and it didnt find anything.
I want to know why is it that it keeps loosing his profile. Do I need to
reinstall Windows? He has admin rights and now if you go under Documnets and
settings, he has 3 folders:
maintenance director
maintenance director.MAINTENANCE
maintenance director.MAINTENANCE.000

I found the files under the 1st folder (I guess the one he was using all
along), and as he has admin privileges, I guess that when it doesnt find the
profile, it just creates a new one....

how can I fix this? reinstalling windows?
any help would be greatly appreciated.

thank you

Have a look at the thread titled "Automatic Updates--Log on problems",
posted in this newsgroup two days before yours.

I will try that. Sorry.. I did not see that before.

thank you for your answer. I will let you know if it worked.

Pegasus.... I run the commands you said and I have:

maintenance director
maintenance director.MAINTENANCE
maintenance director.MAINTENANCE.000

you wrote to the other guy the following:

"Make a note of the most recent file date. Which folder contains the most
recent date? This would be the profile folder you used before this problem
started. The date should show when you last ran Windows. Let's assume it is
"Tim.grand_rapids". You can now do this:
1. Reboot the machine.
2. Log on as Administrator.
3. Using Explorer, rename the folder "c:\documents and settings\tim.tim-02"
to "c:\documents and settings\tim.tim-02(bad)".
4. Rename the folder "c:\documents and settings\tim.grand_rapids" to
"c:\documents and settings\tim.tim-02".

The net effect of this double rename is that you put your former profile
folder into the place that Windows considers your current profile folder.
Now log off and log on as yourself. It it works, fine. If it does not work
then you need to do this:
- Backtrack Steps 3 and 4 above.
- Repeat Steps 1 to 4 above but select a different profile folder name."

Now, it looks to me that the most recent folder was the last one
(maintenance director.MAINTENANCE.000)... did you say that this one is the
correct folder???? shouldnt it be the first one (maintenance director)?

I dont want to do anything weird here, that is why I guess I need you to
confirm that....
thank you..

You need to go by the date of ntuser.dat. It is a reliable indicator when
this profile was last used. Furthermore, if you get it wrong then you can
easily backtrack. No harm done!

ok, I tried that... It seems to be working fine.
Thank you very much for your help and time. I really appreciate it.

have a nice Thanksgiving.
