Lost network connectivity

kickupking

Hi,

I have an IBM thinkpad with both wireless and ethernet netwrok
connections that worked fine with my home network through a Netgear
router.

I recently visited a friends house and tried to connect to an NTL
network to get access. I called the NTL help line. The support rep got
me to plug in the USB connector device that connects to the set top
box. The NTL connection didn't work so she got me to "remove" the USB
network device from the list of devices.

Now I cannot connect to any networks, wirless or ethernet.

Does anyone know how I can troubleshoot this? All devices appear to be
working correctly, but no wireless signals are picked up and when I
plug an ethernet cable in nothing happens.

I'm guessing she got me to remove some service or other. But I don't
know.

Cheers

Are the Server, Workstation, Plug and Play, Computer Browser, etcetera
still there? Are the devices still listed in Device Manager?

If there aren't too many, list all the services. Type up the list of
Network Adapters, too. Also, please include an "ipconfig /all" report.

Thank You.

IPConfig/all just says

Windows IP Configuration
and then back to the c:\ prompt

All devices are listed as working properly

The plot thickens now ... I have noticed that every other boot up
results in a blank blue screen and I have to manually reboot.

Also, I just tried to boot in safe mode with networking and my network
connections DO work!!

Thanks

If Windows IP Configuration spits out nothing, then it finds no Network
Adapters as active to give any information about.

What network adapters are you using?

It sounds like you may have Spyware, I had the same problem on my laptop
when I had spyware on it, the blue screen, the bad network, all of it.

I have tried cleaning all spyware from the machine. It was running
McAfee antivirus 7.0 too. But this has not made any difference.

When I look in the Device Manager the network adapters that show up
are:
- 1394 Net Adapter (disabled)
- Cisco Systems VPN Adapter
- Intel Pro/1000 MT Mobile Connection (working correctly)
- Intel Pro/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter (working correctly)

One other thing, when I reboot in safe mode the last driver to load is
AGP440.sys. I have found mixed messages about this driver on Google
Groups. I can't believe this is a hardware fault as it functions fin in
safe mode with networking. It is too much of a co-incidence that I plug
it into an NTL network and next minute no connections work at all.

Thanks for your help

Well, you are missing a few important ones there.

Computer Browser
DHCP Client
DNS Client
Network Connections
Server
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper

Plus, do you use FTP Publishing or SMTP? I'm guessing you don't, and
all those services do are invite hackers in, and /you don't need them to
access FTP or SMTP servers/.

I will do more research later.

Thanks for your help Andreware.

I ended up doing a system restore to before Friday (when I plugged into
NTL) and that has done the trick. Don't know why I didn't think of that
before.

Cheers

Thanks again for the help. ALthough I am now sorted due to the system
restore I thought I would just say that all those services you
mentioned are running.

The services I listed are the ones that are NOT running in safe mode,
but ARE running in Normal mode. Sorry, that sounds confusing.
Basically, if it is a service causing the problem then it must be one
of those services.

Cheers
