Ok, I have been trying to find a solution to my problem for 2 weeks now. I
am at the end of my rope. I sm not an advanced user but I'm not an idiot
either so don't be patronizing or gloating over your knowledge. Just help
me.

Here is the problem... (oh boy...) I let an aquaintence use my laptop. I
have a Compaq Presario f730US. I run Vista 32bit.
When I got the computer back the next day, I could no longer get wireless.
The Wireless button on the front won't turn blue. I have tried installing
the drivers. I can use the ethernet but I got a laptop so I woulldn't be on
a leash.
I know that allowing someone to take my computer out of my sight ws stupid.
It will never happen again.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
I recently lost my job and can not afford even a small diagnostic fee at the
local computer repair place.
Help

Starting out your post by being passive-aggressively offensive (why assume
people will be "patronizing or gloating"?) isn't the best strategy for
getting people to help you. Just sayin'.

1. Control Panel>Device Manager>Network adapters - expand this category.
What is in there? Do you see an entry for your wireless network adapter?
Does it have a red X next to it? If yes, right-click on it and Enable it.
Turn on your wireless button. You will have wireless.

2. If you still don't have wireless and/or nothing appears for the adapter
after installing the drivers*, the adapter or the button may have died or
something else is interfering.

a. Do a System Restore to when things worked correctly. If this solves the
issue, you're done.

b. If System Restore doesn't solve the issue, then we can go further to
determine if the issue is hardware or software. Do the steps recommended
above and report back the results first.

*And at the risk of seeming "patronizing or gloating", you did install the
correct drivers, yes?

This is a link to HP's page for your Broadcom wireless adapter:
