Lost my outlook address book/contacts

Can anyone help?
I no longer go to my address book/contacts when I click
the address TO...button when creating a new mail message.
I get "address list could not be displayed"
I can still use contacts but have to go there maunualy,
find th person, open the contact then copy and paste the
email address into the TO.... box.
Can anyone help?
