Hi there. I'm new at this whole newsgroup thing and was
hoping someone could help me. We were given a computer
as a gift, and all the Microsoft programs came
preinstalled on it. After moving to Florida, we weren't
told about all of the power outages and so on, and come
to find out that our beloved computer crashed over
night. We lost everything, all the programs and
documents. The repair guy said that they had to give us
a new modem, but that we'd lose everything we previously
had. Does anyone know how I can get my Microsoft
programs back without having to pay an arm and a leg?
I'd appreciate it if you could reply to my email address:

Thanks!

You'll need to get ahold of the CDs that should have come with the computer,
as those CDs will contain the software that was loaded onto the PC.

Without those CDs, it's highly unlikely that you can restore your programs
unless you repurchase the software.

You could try contacting the vendor of the PC for assistance.

The BIOS settings may have been scrambled. Check the setup screen.

If you are new to this, shortly after you turn on the computer, when it is
displaying a lot of weird stuff, it will display a message similar to "Press
Delete," or "Press control-S" or something similar. You will get a setup
screen or several screens, depending on the BIOS in your machine.

Find the entry for the hard disk(s) and make sure they are correct. Most
modern computers have an Auto setting that should work. If it says None then
you definitely have to change it.

BTW, you did create an emergency boot disk, didn't you? If the above does
not work you should try booting with that disk and see what you can find on
your C: drive.
