My client bought a computer with Win 2000 Pro installed. The computer died
last year and was scrapped.

The client still has the original Win 2000 Pro disk, but not the license
number.

Can the license number be recovered?

Yes, if the client has the original case for the CD.
The number is stuck on the back under the label
"Do not lose this key".

The client has not found the original case so far.

She has given me the original disk. She registered the software when she
bought it.

Is there a way to use her legally owned software?

The CD is nothing, the licence number is everything. She would
have to get in touch with Microsoft and explain the situation,
perhaps faxing them her purchase receipt.

How can she or I contact microsoft on this?

The website said tech support is $99 - practically the value of the
software.

In the country where I live there is a listed number
for Microsoft - it's in the White Pages. You don't need
technical advice since yours is a licensing issue.
