I was composing a rather lengthy email in Outlook 2002 when it locked up
on me. After rebooting the computer, the message I had been composing
was nowhere to be found. The contents of that message represents about
four hours of research that I would have to repeat. Does Outlook create a
temporary file for a new message being composed? The PC runs WinXP Pro,
if it makes any difference. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have a copy in the drafts folder? Also, check the hidden Outlook
temporary folder.

Nope, that's the first place I looked.
Also, check the hidden Outlook temporary folder.

Where can I find that?

You can find your location in the registry;
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\Security]
