Hi,

I'm running Windows 2000, I first tried to download and
install SP4 but after it cut out for the 4th time I gave
up and installed SP 3 which I found on an APC disc (Oct
2002).

During the install there was a problem, I didn't take
enough notice and didn't think to write it down, but
anyway either way I went, ie cancel the install or
continue without that file, it said I may have problems
running windows properly. And I do. I have completely
lost my keyboard and mouse on that computer. I can go
into setup and my keyboard works or if I go into the safe
mode menu its fine but as soon as the first windows screen
appears, it's gone. I can't even turn the num. lock on or
off. They don't exist.

Is there some sort of driver maybe that I can download
onto floppy disk and then have run when I start my
computer the next time so I can get my keyboard and mouse
back? Please help as I've tried everything I can think of
but without keyboard and/or mouse in Windows i'm limited.

Thanks,

The basic driver for the mouse and the keyboard is in the OS. Therefore, it
must be there before you can start. What type of connection did you have
USB, PS/2, serial? What hardware?

Thanks for the reply,

It's a Dell computer Dimension 8100 model, Dell keyboard
etc PS/2 connections.

The basic driver is there, as I said I can work in the
BIOS setup and move around the F8 menu but once it starts
up Windows they are gone. Missing or frozen I don't know.

I have another computer that also runs Windows 2000 Pro, I
will make a boot disk from that machine and start up
the 'broken' machine with that disk and see what happens,
but I want to upgrade to XP anyway so I may just solve the
problem by doing a format and installing XP. But I would
really love to figure out what happened! It's driving me
crazy.

Cheers,

I think what I would try first is to get a copy of SP4 and install it first
and see if that restores your functionality. I found that SP3 did disable
some hardware when I first installed it, when it first came out, and that
SP4 was more stable (though a few here have disagreed :) ). You may just
have some minor driver corruption, if you can see the devices in BIOS and
also when the machine boots up. That would be the simple solution if you
have a plain vanilla mouse and keyboard.

Thanks Mercury, my boss is going to burn me a copy and
I'll try that tonight. I'll let you know how it goes
tomorrow.

Problem solved.

I got hold of a USB mouse and plugged that in and it
worked and it appears that somehow the drivers for the
PS/2 ports became dis-associated with the ports and of
course they stopped working. We 're-installed' the port
drivers and everything is back to normal again. Also
installed SP4 with no problems.

Thanks for your help Mercury, very muchly appreciated.
