Lost items

Hi
Can anyone help? PLEASE
My neighbours using XP and somehow has lost his floppy drive icon. Device manager says its there and working, however floppys arent being read, nor can we save to it
Cant reinstall using the XP CDRom as he's lost the authentification code (DOH)
I would be most grateful if you could reply as I only check in occasionally
