Lost IP address?

On the network connections, the status of the connection says it's: "aquiring network address". Also, the IP address of the computer is "invalid." The internet is usually working fine. this computer is physically connected to the BT home hub. The wireless connection works (since we are on it at the moment). Our IP address is 0.0.0.0. I know its not meant to be that. How do i find the previous IP address, before it became "invalid"?

Pardon any mistakes ;)

BT rules for diagnostic problems

1. Shutdown the PC/laptop
2. Power off the Modem
3. wait a few mins
4. Restart Modem
5. wait for lights to flash normally
6. Reboot PC/laptop

:D

Sorry, I put 2+2 together and it came out 5

Still, the rules will apply. ;)

If it don't work, as powering off the Router will reset it, then I concede. :p

If you reboot/reset the router it should automatically assign you a new ip as BT offers dynamic ip's so it wont be the same again. :)

Okie dokie, thanks for the response everyone :)

I'll try your suggestion first V_R when i get the chance, then have a stab at mucks' suggestion :D

Lol, indeed, i was just adding my own bit of info into the thread.

Was kinda replying to the "How do i find the previous IP address, before it became "invalid"?" bit.

:)

I managed to get round to doing it and nothing happened. same old problem.

Powered off pc ok, even unplugged everything in the home hub and re-connected.

i tried finding a 'reset' button, but the only button that was pushable was the one next to the 'wireless association' or some simliar piece of text.

The computer is still 'Acquiring network address'.

hm.

There is no 'reset' button on a BT Home Hub, you have to remove the power cable.

;)

also try;

Click on start / click on run
type services.msc in the run box (a services local window will/should come up)
Look for the DHCP Client service and double click on it
Make sure the startup type is Automatic and that it is started
Apply and close the servise Local window and see if it works

Thanks Mucks,

pulled the power cable and nothing changed. but at least nothing appears to be faulty since it knew there was a disconnection.

found what you said, and it was set to 'disabled'. Changed it to automatic but to no avail.

BUT! after looking back on the DHCP client bit, it was stopped. so i started it and BINGO it worked!! :D :D.

Thank you dearly Muckshifter and everyone else who contributed! :)

Now the question is, how did it get set like that in the first place?
