lost info in address bar

I used to be able to click on my address bar and just
choose among several addresses kept there as a shortcut to
the sites I had previously visited. Now I have lost all
of that info, so I have to retype my addresses all the
time or use my favorites.

I have checked the options available to me but I can't
seem to fix this on my own.

Carole,
Do you mean you *have enabled autocomplete* in the content tab of internet
options for web addresses and forms? Also in the advanced tab of internet
options, is a checkbox for "use inline autocomplete for web addresses". This
one is for inline completion of that which you type. The former is for the
dropdown addresses in a field.
