Running IE6 under W2000 with SP4.
Lost IE6 functionality (browser window starts to open then hangs) after
installing Winpoet at the instruction of Earthlink tech support in an effort
to restore my recently lost DSL connectivity (have since determined the lost
connection was due to a defective DSL modem).
Uninstalled Winpoet but IE6 still hangs as described above.
Cannot uninstall IE6 as it disappeared from "Add/Remove Programs" per KB
article 293907.
Endeavored to uninstall SP4 per KB article 277624 to restore "Remove
Internet Explorer 6" to Add/Remove Programs but the "remove" option was
grayed out.
There was a "hotfix" (may be the wrong term) for SP4 shown in Add/Remove
Programs with an active "remove" button, but when selected, it generated a
caution dialog that "the following programs may not work after this
uninstall" then listed most all of the programs on the computer.
Tried the w2kexcp.exe /u command from the Internet Explorer/IE Uninstall
folder per KB article 293907 but nothing happened.
Booted from the W2000 CD and did an emergency repair which processed
successfully, but did not restore the damaged IE6 files.
It seems the only alternatives are (1) some type of reinstall of the
operating system (parallel, full-blown reformat & reinstall), or (2) leaving
IE6 crippled and installing Netscape or Firefox.
Any help appreciated.
