Lost HDD upon startup

I have a PIII-850 system with 4Hdd's and 2 optical drives(all IDE). I have a PCI Ide RAID card to handle the extra devices. Every time I start Windows XP it does not recognize one of my HDD's. If I go into the device manager and scan for hardware changes it usually picks it right up (sometimes it takes a few tries) but this has become a tiresome routine. What could be the cause of this and how can I fix it?

Are they Western Digital hard drives?

Check your basics first. Loose connections etc. Add up your wattage
for each
peripheral and make sure your PSU is up to standard. Then it could
just be
that the drive is going south.
