Hello, we have @500 systems here running Windows XP. Ove
the past couple of weeks I have had 9 systems loose their
floopy drives. It shows up in device manager, but does not
show up in Explorer. I know the drive works because I can
boot from a floppy with DOS, copy and delete files from
the floppy. I have checked the systems for viruses and
other worms and have found none. The systems are not the
same hardware wise and the only thing installed was
Microsoft Critical patches (no other software/hardware). I
have read the tech article on Microsoft's web site Q812489
and linked articles, but none solve the problem.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
mitch

Additional information about the environment these systems
are running in would be helpful. If the article you
mentioned or the accompanying article did not apply to
your problem, then there may be another possibility.

If the computers are running under a Windows 2000/2003
domain, a group policy may be in effect that prevents
floppy access to only locally-logged on users. This is an
available Computer Configuration policy. Check with your
network administrator to determine if it is in effect on
the network. I've not used it before, so I don't know if
it makes the floppy invisible to the user or still visible
but inaccessible.
