Hi

I have a Toshiba laptop running Vista.

Recently an entire directory was wiped out. Tried recycle bin and some
online tools
to retrieve lost files (they have .pdf and .doc extensions). Nothing
worked.

Can anyone please suggest my options other than losing the files
forever?

Thanks

Hi,

Stop using that drive now. Just kill the power and stop. Everything you do
with it increases the chances that the data will be overwritten. If the
standard freeware recovery tools, like Brain Kato's restoration.exe from
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/restoration.HTML aren't working, you're going
to need a specialist that knows what they're doing. Bring your wallet, as
they're not usually cheap.

On the computer. Any other brilliant questions?

Well you jerk, if the folder was on a NETWORK drive then it won't be in any
recycle bin. For example. Any other moronic comments?

Every moment you have used your laptop since losing the files has reduced
your chances of recovering them all.

I would have immediately stopped using it, and used a decent file recovery
program that could access the drives through network, or at least boot from
CD and save files over network. I've had great results (99% recovery) with
GetDataBack for NTFS, but there are some others worth trying too.

That program looks rather basic, and will not be able to work through
network. As it is a laptop, the drive cannot be easily put into another
machine (although it would not require any additional hardware, if it has a
SATA interface). For freeware, something like this would be better, as it
can be run from a CD:
