Lost File

I hope I am in the right group here with this question, if not please direct
me to the correct one.

My next door neighbour has sent me this and I don't know what to do to help
her. She is using XP Home and Works Suite

Any assistance would be really appreciated.

I was working on a travel journal that I have been doing for ages thru
microsoft word. I went to save - as I do regularly - when it told me it was
not able to save & had to change the name of the document to ~wrl1516.tmp -
so I said ok as it did this to me once before a while ago. Now I have lost
everything. I can find the history of both documents in microsoft works
history but neither of the documents will open. I have tried using the
search engine & everything else I can think of except system restore - would
this find the file as there are days of work on it.

And no I didn't think I would need to have a disc back up as I stupidly
assume computers are fairly advanced in technology and wouldn't just loose
information.

Operating a computer without taking regular backups is as sensible as having
casual sex with a variety of strangers without taking precautions. One day
something nasty will happen. Now it has!

The chances of recovering this file are slim and next to impossible if she
has continued to use the PC, and it sounds as though between you, you have.

There is a remote chance that File Recovery software may be able to locate
at least some of the original file, but download it on *your* machine and
run it from floppy disc on hers.

System restore will not help. It doesn't touch data files. It will however
overwrite.

If the document is valuable, it may be worth paying a specialist recovery
company, but it will not be cheap.

I'm afraid the file is gone. Temp files are deleted when Word is closed. I'm
not sure what causes the problem, but tell your neighbor no matter what
happens not to allow Word to save her document with a filename ending in
..tmp. A ~wrlxxxx.tmp file is usually created by copying something to the
Clipboard, but several of these files are created when you are working in
Word, and they are in fact copies of the previous version of a file (but
deleted when you close the document). I can't imagine what's going on here,
but the sooner it's sorted, the better.

It most certainly isn´t. As the file is saved to disk with a .doc extension
before, an older version of the document still exists on disk. With a tool
like Resoration (rest2514) you can at least partially restore the contect of
the document.
