iv lost my favourites in ie6 and also i cant add any more either, i
reastarted my pc but it made no difference, can anyone help?

Perhaps the REgistry entry is wrong?

You can change the value of Favorites in the Registry in these
two keys: (ignore the second if the value is not there)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders

For Windows 2000/XP:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders]
Set the Favorites path to : %USERPROFILE%\Favorites

The above should be a REG_EXPAND_SZ value, not REG_SZ

download ie6 from again? i cannot uninstall ie6 first though as it does not
appear in add/remove programes

You have XP, so you cannot uninstall IE6.

Have you read the rest of my response carefully?

has it ever occurred to you to create a backup of your favourites and
cookies ?
it does not require a college degree and takes less than a minute.

wouldnt have made any difference cos i cant add to favorites as its stopped
working

Try creating a new profile/user. If the favorites work there, you can copy
any documents or other data from the old profile to the new one. then delete
the old profile.

~john aka: jopa

It's possible your Favorite's folder has become damaged. Try exporting your
Favorites to a file using IE's File...Import/Export tool. Then log on as
administrator in a different user profile, delete the Favorites folder for
the troubled user profile, reboot and that Favorites folder will be
recreated as empty. Then use the Import/Export tool in IE to reimport your
Favorites. More info here:

thanks to everyone that tried to help,iv managed to get it working again in
rather an un orthodox way, i renamed the favorites folder to favorites1 and
changed the registry to %USERPROFILE%\Favorites1 seems to work well.....so
far....but im wondering if iv created another prob by changing the name, time
will tell
