I have lost all ability to use my favorites menu. The
folder is still on my hard drive, but IE can't access it.
There are instructions to fix this at the web link below.
The only problem is, I don't understand half of it! Can
someone please explain how to do what this link says, step
by step?

THANK YOU!

I don't know what the following are or where to find
them: HKEY, User Shell Folder, and %USERPROFILE%

I don't use XP but have you been confused by the missing underlines?
Perhaps Ramesh will turn up and tell us why they don't show?

You use Regedit.exe to change the values in the Registry.
You navigate down the keys in a similar fashion to navigating in
Explorer with files and folders.

The two Registry keys mentioned are:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders
I hesitate to give advice on user profiles as I am unfamiliar with XP.
Post details of what you see there.

"I have lost all ability to use my favorites menu" sounds very blunt. I'm
assuming that the favorites are not shown when you click the Favorites menu
at the top of Internet Explorer. Read below:

You need to edit the registry. See "Description of the Microsoft Windows
registry" article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;256986

If you don't prefer editing the registry, use this utility and reset the
Favorites path to defaults.
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/RedirectFolders.htm

* Select Favorites from the listbox and note down the value there.
* Optionally, you can backup the current user shell folder settings by
clicking "backup ......." button.
* Select Favorites from the listbox and click "Restore default" button in
the right-side.
