I am trying to figure out how, if possible, to retrieve my
lost email. I had an error message on OE which said ck my
memory. My memory was fine, so I exited out of OE, then
reopened it. ALL my emails were gone. What went wrong and
can I still retrieve my lost mail?
Thanks, pbarker

You should have a folder named Outlook Express - find it
using the search function in the start menu. You should
see a bunch of .dbx files, one for each folder you had in
Outlook.
Then open Outlook Express and go to Tools, Options,
Maintenance, Store Folder - that will show where Outlook
is looking for your data. If it is not looking in the
right place, change where it is looking.

Another possibility is use the System Restore function in
Windows (I have it in WinME)- Programs, Accessories,
Ststem Tools. And restore to a point before everything
got all #@$%'d up. Good luck.

Greg....thanks for your suggestions...unfortunately, I am
operating a Win98 and there is no system restore function
in my system tools.....I did find the dbx folder in my OE.
If I double click on it...is asks me what program I wish
to use to open it and OE is not on the list. I am not sure
how to tell if the missing emails are in that folder or if
it just contains the one email I have received post
catastrophe...any more suggestions? Thks, PBarker

That did the trick!! Thanks soooooo much! pbarker

Try this tool. If not successful then they may be gone and unrecoverable.

go here http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspx and download
dbxtract, to allow you to extract read and play all the emails and news
posts
inside those .dbx, if you want to you can even drag and drop them back into
OE

.

Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

Disable Background Compacting and frequently perform a manual compact of all
OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/maintain.htm.

Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.
