I've just been cleaning my system to remove traces of a nasty infection by
the 'Microsoft' download (not) worm. Don't know exactly what caused my
problem, but the BIOS has forgotten it has a HDD fitted - it insists my
primary master device is a CD ROM ! The Hard disk is on an ATA100
controller on my Asus mainboard, and the BIOS is a Award one. The computer
fires up OK and everything seems to work, but I'd feel happier if I
re-formatted the C:\ drive and re-installed everything. Trouble is, when I
boot into DOS (it's WIN98SE) and enter 'FORMAT C: /s' the system says not
enough memory available. I think this must be connected to the 'lost' hard
disk - it can't see anything to format !
How can I persuade the BIOS to find the drive again ?
