Lost DNS record

Hi all,
I removed the DNS record from the only server on the
network. It is in mixed mode with Win98 & WinXP Pro WS.
I managed to manually get around it with static DNS
entries and host files. However, at some point i need to
get it back. I planned to do a DC promo, remove it as a
domain controller. Then promote it again to a DC. I
assume then that all accounts need to be recreated and
permissions set. Is that all i will be up against or does
it get more complicated than that? Note: there are only 8
users so the accounts are not a huge deal to recreate.

Thanks in advance.

What DNS record did you remove?

Are you also saying that AD is not registering properly in DNS?

There could be a number of issues going on here. To help give us a start in
diagnosing this, we need more information on what's going on. We may even be
able to help you avoid a reinstall, depending on your configuration. What we
need to see is:

1. An unedited ipconfig /all
2. The AD DNS domain name (as it shows up in ADUC)
3. Did you enable updates on your zone?
4. What service pack is on the DC?

Thanks

=================================

.
The forward lookup record cannot be accessed at all. It
is corrupted. I don't have the IP information redily
available however, I cannot manage DNS. Active directory
is not fully implemented because of the mixed mode with
Win98 machines. It is just a file server with 8 users.
Can I not just do a DCPromo without reinstalling Win2K?

SOunds like the Enterprise is losing orbit and Scotty can't fix it.

Just kidding.

Joe, do me a favor and post that info for me so I can get an idea of what's
going on. And no, being in mixed mode really isn't that bad at all and no,
it's not depeneded on your win98 clients, but rather for backward legacy
domain controller support for NT4 BDCs. If you don;t have any BDCs, then you
can change it.

Please post the addtional information. We will most likely be able to assist with a quick fix that will NOT require a resintall or a DCPROMO. Getting records
back in DNS is an extremely simple process. We just need more info so we can offer the best sollution.
