I have lost my desktop on a 2K Pro machine. It allows me
to log-in and gives me my wallpaper, but no icons or task
bar. If I try to load thru a cd, I get that initial
program screen, but not my normal desktop. One of the kids
was surfing the net and I think she got a bug. I have a
router and firewall along with security programs that are
updated regularly, so I'm not sure if that really is the
problem. Could some please give me suggestions??

Thanks

Check that explorer.exe is the default shell to start. Look at the Reg_Sz
string value of;
"Shell"="Explorer.exe"
found at
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Else these may help you.

All the mods DP mentioned have yet to work for me with the
problem you described.

If you tried his methods, and are still having problems,
try this:

Apply the basic workstation security template
Run mmc & add the security templates & configuration
snap in
Open/create a database, right click and apply the
template for the basic workstation

After that, remove, and manually reapply teh permissions
on the Default User template and the All Users template.

Reboot machine. In my experience somthing is hosing the
permissions on the Default User and All Users template.
