Lost all user Profiles at Log in

Greetings:

My older computer, running Win XP serivce pack 2, suddenly lost all the user
profiles. The system boots up to the proflie screen, and asks for you to
select a profile. Unfortunatey, there are no present. Control+Alt+Delete
does not work, but the mouse moves about.

I noticed a few others on the boards have had a similar issue, but no one
has responded to their threads. I want to try something before I do the
destructed restore, which hopefully will fix it. Not being able to log in, I
can't get any info to supply to Tech support.

Any help in this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Robert

Unfortunately, it does the same thing. After loading everything, Safe mode
heads to the same screen of click a profile, but there are none showing...

Robert,

Try running System Restore from a Command Prompt from within Safe Mode.
Roll the system back to a date just before this issue appeared :

Thats the problem, I can't even get to the command prompt. When I enter safe
mode, it goes straight to the "choose a log-in" which none are present. In
the link you provided, says log in to the Admin, but I can't. Its not
there... I am leaning towards the destructive restore, but I really don't
want to do this...

I hate all the reinstall time....

Anything else you can suggest, and thanks for the effort...

Is there a Norton product installed or just installed ?
Do you have an XP CD or the dreaded "Restore Disc" ?

What does the following command show

NET USERS

If it lists several profiles, append a profile name to the previous
command and see if the Local Group Memberships line is empty that
explains why it can't be found, it needs to be added to the group Users
as follows

NET LOCALGROUP "Users" "profile name" /ADD

rinse and repeat for all profiles.

Hope this helps.
