Can anyone tell me how to log in as administrator when
the administrator password has been reset and lost. I
can only log on as power user and need to log in as
administrator to load some software. Is there a way of
getting round password problem without reinstalling win
XP?

you may download some software to recover the password.

A Windows XP computer should have at least two accounts with
"Administrator" privileges: one created when you set up the computer,
and the hidden "Administrator" account.

If you didn't define a password for the "Administrator" account, you
can log into it and remove or change the password for any of the other
accounts. Start Windows XP in Safe mode to access the "Administrator"
account.
