lost administrator password

My laptop cannot boot because the user screen is blank--
no names to click. I have the set up disks to make a
repair. I get to the screen that asks for the
administrator's password and I don't remember what it is.
The original set up occurred three years ago and I have
never needed to use it since. So the repair stops there.

How can I get around this or recover my lost administrator
password? There are only two of us in a private residence
using three computers and I don't need an administrator
at all.

Can anyone help?

I have used a freebie found on the internet to reset the admin password

search google.com for bd040116.zip

Can't remember which link I got mine from. This unzips to a few files that
create a bootable Linux disk. This takes you through some command line
options and allows you to reset or set to blank admin and other user
passwords.

It has worked for me twice, on one other where we think the netlogon had
failed we had to do a full re-install from a formatted hard disk, that
machine was so bad that even an in-place install would not work.

The utility may or may not work for you or may do damage, to get critical
data you might be able to slave the HDD in another PC, depending on the
security settings.
