Lost ability to fax in Windows 2000

The fax service has been working fine for a long time.
But it just stopped working for no obvious reason.

When I create a document, print to the fax driver and fill
the transmission details then click to fax, the fax icon
appears in the taskbar for a few seconds, nothing happens,
then the icon disappears and the job remains in the queue.
Windows does not allow me to terminate the fax process and
try again and rebooting the system does not solve the
problem. There is no way to uninstall and reinstall the
fax service.

When I boot the other Windows installation on another
partition on the same computer, I can fax without any
problem, so the hw/cfg are fine.

The following warning is in the Windows EventView App Log:

Hi,
I had the same "functionality" two days ago. After reading some news
here I
found a hint. windows 2000 seems to be able to handle only one or two
fax devices. So after deleting some bluetooth modems in the modems
list my analog modem appeared again in the settings/fax/fax devices
list. And now it is working again.
Hope this hint helps
regards
Joachim

Please provide more details about what are the changes you did to the
machine from the time it was working to the time it stopped working. A
failed fax job will be retried after the retry period. You cannot force to
start transmission on a fax job in between. To configure retry period,
please visit 'Fax Service Management'. In the worst case, you may have to
enable logging and send us the log files through Russ Valentine (our MVP).
Other thing you can try is to uninstall and install the modem back.

I am set to fax immediately and I cannot. There is no
retrying. I have done nothing to my system. All of may
faxes are immediate and it was working then stopped. I DK
when, as I have not used it in a while and last time I
tried it, it would not send. The symptoms are described in
my message.

Well, it looks as if the fax service makes some sort of
arbitrary decision to schedule faxes about 10mins later,
rather than immediate. I have no idea why -- it was always
faxing immeditaely and then it switched to delayed for no
obvious reason.

Even more weird is the fact that I deleted the driver,
reinstalled it and it then faxed immediately the first
time. But after that one the subsequent faxes were delayed
again.

There is another printer driver on the system which also
behaves in a strange way: after the 1st job, it starts
ignoring its settings and prints high quality one-sided
instead of draft, double sided.

What could have such an effect on multiple printer drivers?

Correction: it sets it up for delayed transmission, but
soon after that the driver icon disappears from the task
bar and nothing is faxed.
