I seem to have lost the "CMD" function.

When I go to start-run-cmd I get a dos box. But when I try to use it I get a
message that cmd does not recognize the command I insert no matter what it
is. I tried it with regsvr32. and I have tried to put in ipconfig and get
nothing except the comment that it is not a correct cmd.

Any ideas would be helpful.

My machine runs XP sp2 and has all the updates installed.
At the moment I am unable to get into the windows update system nor am I
able to run updates on the Anti spy beta.

Try looking at a computer that has DOS on it.

There's a good chance your Path environmental variable is
messed up.
Download and run fixpath2 from this site:

http://internet.cybermesa.com/~bstewart/misctools.html

Take a look at the readme file that's included for more insight
into the problem you're having with the Command Prompt.

Next, make sure your AV software is up to date and run a scan.
The behavior you describe may be caused by a virus or some
other pest.

You might also consider running some of the online virus
scanners:

Good luck
