Loss of system sound

My system (XP PRO)sounds such as voice mail, start-up,
exit, ygm,errors, all sounds associated with functional
ingress,egress,keystroke and notification have stopped. I
still have excellent CD and DVD sound but nothing else. I
have been to Dell, Dr Watson, MS Help & Support Center and
every sound/audio troubleshooter screen available. Even
AOL Help since their sounds don't function either.
Everything checks out enabled and operational. The
hardware that should be,is. All sound and audio device
properties have been checked and rechecked. The program
event sounds have been duplicated under different sound
schemes without success. It has been verified that the
system is configures for Windows and yes, is turned on.
Somewhere there is a glitch that refuses to be identified
I would appriciate any help I can get on this problem.
