pls help. when windows is loading it takes an inordinate
amount of time, and my ram may go as low as 10! i have
128. it has been suggested that i remove items from my
task bar ... but ... do i have to remove them .. or
uninstall them? i don't necessarily want to remove the
programs. what in the world do i do. i will get another
128 of ram. i did buy a 'recover ram' product, but i
can't run it til everything is finished.

thanks very much

Don't waste your time with the "ram recovery" software you bought, it is
useless. RAM is cheap. Add at least another 128 M and things will work much
better. You can also click Start, Run, type in "msconfig", without quotes,
click Startup tab and uncheck any item you don't to start on startup. But
you need to know what you are unchecking. I suggest you have a knowledgeable
friend help.

.Hi Barb:
It would be best if you had 512mb of ram.
XP at idle uses almost all the ram you have and when you
launch a program the remainder is gone.I have 1 gig of
ram and it is not uncommon to be using half of this.

Try running msconfig and disabling all the items from starting under the
startup tab and see if it runs any quicker.
DONT disable your anivirus software of firewall if you come across them in
msconfig or you leave yourself open to attack.

I have to say that 128MB is not enough to run xp, its about enough to get
the system up, but if you want to run any programs then you need a minimum
of 256MB. 512MB will give better performance. 384MB wouldn't be bad if you
were to just add 256.

As a final point, these RAM recovery products aren't really very useful. If
windows xp doesn't need something in memory, it will either page it out to
pagefile, write it back to the data file, or discard it in order to meet
demand for memory.

These memory reclamation products force windows xp to page out prematurely,
only to have to reread stuff back in later. This costs you in cpu processing
power. If you don't have enough RAM, add more.
