I've been using XP for 3 years with no video problems until now. Whether
I'm playing a video strip or a DVD movie, the display area is black,
though the audio comes through fine. Any suggestions as to what is
missing that was there before? As I said, this was all working fine
before. Before what? I don't know.

Reinstall the DVD decoding software (usually PowerDVD or WinDVD) for the DVD
side and the relevant codecs (usually xVid and/or DiVX) for the AVI files.

exists. Any other suggestions.... from anyone? thanks

My monitor 's resolution amd refresh rate is: 800x600x75HZ

Additional info: While my MPEG files will not display in Windows Media
Player or Real Player, they do work in Quick Time Player.

Do you know if they are MPEG1 or MPEG2 files?

Are other applications displaying correctly?

I don't know if they are MPEG1 or 2, since they are not labeled as such
though they are probably both.

All other graphics are displaying correctly. As mentioned before, I ca
view MPEGs in Quick Time Player, so I know the files are valid.

Which DVD decoders are you using according to the Video Decoder Check-Up
Utility?

covers how to look into this.
