Loss of Internet service.

A friend of mine has been connected to the internet
through a cable modem for several months. recently I made
some changes to her computer, (removed an expired Macafee
program, removed WinMuschi-which installed itself, ran
windows update, defragged, and removed a casino thing
from the start up menu) and since doing this she has no
connection to the internet. Her ISP has checked her modem
and says its fine, an IT tech has checked the pc and says
its fine and the internet setting are the same as they
always were for her ISP. What have I done???
 
If you have internet access you may try downloading the latest version of Ad
Aware, Spybot, and/or other spyware removal tools and take them to your
friend's computer (perhaps with a burned CD, if you have access to a
burner). My guess is that something plugged itself into her Winsock stack
and when you removed all those things it made that something mad. If it was
a spyware something (installed by the casino app, for instance), then the
spyware removal tools will take care of it. If it was WinMuschi then you
may have to do some more work.

Before you go further, I will mention that there was a MacAfee patch that
caused internet access problems that came out last week. You mentioned that
you removed an expired MacAfee, but not if you installed a new one. If you
did and updated during the window before the patch was pulled, that may be
your problem. You can uninstall it and reinstall it from the CD to fix the
problem.

So, first step, run the spyware removal tools and see what that gets you.
They may well solve your problem. If not, then its time to check out your
Winsock stack. To do this:

Open up "msinfo32", expand Components, Networking and click on Protocol.
Scroll through the list (it may be long) and see if any of the Names listed
there start with anything besides MSAFD or RSVP. Names that contain "XXXX
over MSAFD" or "XXXX over RSVP" may also bad. If you see anything like
that, select all of the text in the protocol window (click in the pane with
the results, then go to the Edit menu and pick Select All), and paste it
into notepad, and bring it back to your computer to include in a reply to
this message.

You may have to reset her Winsock stack if you find anything like that.
There are some tools on the Internet that can help, and there are some
manual steps you can do too, but post back here with the results from
checking first before doing that, as there is no sense in doing it if it
isn't necessary.

I know this is a lot of info but this is what was listed
when I followed your instructions. I havent yet managed
to install a spyware remover as when I tried to download
one earlier today I downloaded my own virus so we are
going to buy one. I hope this is the info you wanted.

This looks like McAfee is plugged into your winsock stack. Did you remove
Mcafee completely? If so, how did you do it? Their uninstaller should have
removed those entries. Did you install a new version after you removed the
old one? You may try installing McAfee again and uninstalling it with its
uninstaller to clean up those entries.

If all the files for McAfee were removed, but those entries still remain,
that would definitely cause the problem you are seeing. The cleanest way to
get rid of them is to let the uninstaller handle it. If that doesn't work,
post back again and I'll get you the steps to do it manually. Keep replying
to this thread like you have been - there are lots of posts every day and I
might miss it if you started a new one.

Hi, I tried to install and uninstall McAfee again but
like last time there was no uninstall option with the
version I have. I had to remove it using the Add/Remove
option in the control panel.I didnt install a newer

have to manually remove the threads. I would appreciate
your help with this as I dont have a clue how to do it.

had a man to look at pc cos I wasnt sure how to do what
you suggested. He followed your suggestions and has fixed
the internet connection. BIG BIG THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR
HELP!
p.s. It was the winsock stack and the McAfee.
