Loss of internet connection

Any ideas on what would cause Windows to drop its internet connection
intermittently? This happens at random intervals, anywhere between 2
minutes to an hour, requiring a system reboot to regain the connection.

I'm using XP with a Motorola Surfboard SB4100 cable modem.
(At home, no network)

Thanks!
Joe

depending on your service provider outages are a comon thing from time to
time. look at the modem next time it goes out and make sure to see if it
shows a connection.

Hi Joe
A year or so ago we used to have a similar/same problem with a direct
connection between pc and pace broadband modem. No one was able to help in
several posts on here. Several/many times during the day the connection
would just disappear, sometimes after a couple of minutes other times a few
hours. Occasionally releasing then renewing an IP address would work, but
usually it required rebooting the modem and the PC to get a connection. We
put it down to an ISP problem and just put up with it.
When we swapped over to using our netgear fr11p ( I state the brand because
I dont know if it would be the same with every other router) the problem
disappeared completely.
Recently the firewall died and we had to make do with ICS until the new one
arrived. Again we had the same symptoms.
I'd prefer to know what the problem was, but it's not there with the
firewall so Ive not bothered further.
