Loss of entry in \WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\SERVICES file

I'm trying to resolve a port conflict between Veritas
Backup Exec 9.1 Remote Agent and an application using
port 10000 on Win2K SBS. Per instructions from Veritas,
I made an entry in the \ETC\SERVICES file to provide an
alternate port for Veritas to use. The 1st scheduled
backup ran ok but the 2nd scheduled backup failed with
the same error. When I checked the Services file there
is no sign of the line I added. I've repeated this
several times.

Make sense to anyone? Is there some security setting
somewhere that prevents permanent changes to Services
file? Something in the registry?

Hi Alan,

This came into the networking folder but really belongs in either applications or registry group.
But let me suggest this first. If this does not resolve your issue, then please send a request to
one of the above groups.

When you make changes and they do not last through a reboot, then there are a couple of
things that would cause that. 1. Some type of policy setting preventing any changes. 2. You do
not have permisison to make the changes permanent - your logon isn't authorized for
permmanent/system changes.

So you may want to look into thses things first and I'm sure you will find that you need to have
some type of higher level Admin rights (local and/or domain) to make the change you made
permanent.

Hope this helps,
Gary

I am having a similar problem. This arose when I upgraded from Backup
Exec 8.6 to 9.1. I have a database application that requires changes
to the C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc file on my Windows 2000 server.
I make the changes and then the next morning they are gone. This is
not a rights issue as I am admin. I think it has to do with Veritas
Backup Exec software.

I temporarily set the file to read only and removed the ability of all
users, including administrator, to write to this file. I will
research the solution further and post to Veritas.

Thanks.
