Loss of connection

Hi
I can log on to the web no problem but after a few seconds I lose the
connection and my sound goes on to mute. I have checked to make sure that my
connection does not disconnect after connecting ( if that makes sense ! ) and
I have no idea why my sound should mute. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm on broardband
virus and spyware free
E trust EZ antivirus
XP sp1
Soundmax sound device (?)
and sound is actually muted in sound application choices
