Losing XP file access on LAN

If I reboot my Vista (Business) PC, I can't access my XP machine files unless
I reboot it also, but I can print to its printer. XP can see & access my
Vista PC with or without rebooting. Both can always access internet. Any help
greatly appreciated.

Workgroup names are the same on both XP and Vista, both fully updated.
IPConfig dumps are identical on each when working or problem happening. LLTD
patch installed on XP, and "restrictanonymous" key is "0".

Vista Networking and Sharing has:
- Network Discovery ON
- File Sharing ON
- Public Folder Sharing ON
- Password Protection OFF
- Printer sharing ON
- Media sharing OFF
- Network is set to “Privateâ€
- IPV 6 unchecked / disabled

Thanks for your help.

Chuck,

How about some detail on "I can't access my XP machine". Can't see it in My
Network Places? Get an error message when clicking on it (what message?)? Get
no response, just a dumb look?

Those are interesting details. Maybe you'll find more in my tutorial.

We could look at logs from "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config
server", and "net config workstation", from each computer, together, and
diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow
instructions precisely (download browstat!):

Chuck[MVP] -

SORRY! And THANKS for your response! I had posted a bit more detail in the
Vista networking discussion area, but figured maybe it was too much due to no
responses. Incidentally, right after I sent it (Subject: Lose XP access after
Vista reboot 8/23/2007 9:40 AM PST), I found your site and began reading,
and replied to the above post with your links. I posted to the XP discussion
(this thread) after not receiving responses on the Vista thread. I include
that info and more per your directions, below.

I've spent the past week reading info re Vista & XP Home (SP2) networking. I
have gotten file and printer sharing to work, yet have one remaining problem
(that I can tell, anyway). Thank you in advance for taking the time to read
my post, and certainly any responses are welcome.

Configuration Details: One (1) XP Home SP2 (Name: DDKQ0K91); One (1) Vista
Business (Name: PWI); Netgear WGU624 firewall router; all 100MB Cat 5e
hardwired. Workgroup names are the same on both XP Home SP2 and Vista
Business (MSHOME), both fully updated. LLTD hot patch installed on XP, and
"restrictanonymous" key is "0".

Vista Networking and Sharing has:
- Network Discovery ON
- File Sharing ON
- Public Folder Sharing ON
- Password Protection OFF
- Printer sharing ON
- Media sharing OFF
- Network is set to “Privateâ€
- IPV 6 unchecked / disabled, not deleted

PC-cillin Internet Security 2007 & firewall on both (security Medium;
TCP/UDPs as appropriate), ensuring no change when all firewalls disabled or
on. Windows firewall off on both.

Verified all 192.168.10.n adxs. Netgear WGU624, 100MB Cat 5e hardwired. Full
internet access on both at all times.

History: Ran flawlessly for 3+ years when both were XP Home SP2. Replaced
one XP PC (Dim 3000) with one new Vista PC (Dim 9200). And here my issues
began.

Been through the File & Printer Sharing in Vista
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/network/evaluate/vista_fp.mspx#E1C several
times. Looked through the content on http://www.ChicagoTech.net and
www.HowToNetworking.com. NOW I've been through *some* content on your
(PChuck) site. Holy Toldeo that's a lot of stuff!

Going out on a limb, I'm guessing I have a Master Browser issue possibly
caused by my Vista not assuming the Master Browser status when I reboot it,
then when I reboot the XP box afterwards, the Vista assumes Master Browser
status. But what the heck do I know... it just works!

Any help is greatly appreciated. Must say this experience is similar to what
I imagine male berthing to be. You are right... paranoia IS a natural
response to experience. I was feeling kind of good I got it to work as well
as I have. Now, I figure I must've been just lucky. :o/

Thank you. Cheers!

Thank you. Cheers!

- Chuck

All right, Chuck! I wish half the people here would provide even half the
detail that you did.

Your problem is indeed the master browser issue. Let's see how simple the fix
is. First stabilise the situation. Stop and Disable the Browser Service on
DDKQ0K91. Then re start both computers. If the problem was a simple browser
conflict, that should fix it. If the problem continues, then fresh browstat
logs should give us a good starting place.

Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience.

Chuck[MVP],

Tried to stick my reply at the bottom, but your response is truncated so I'm
sticking it up here. Don't know what I'm doing wrong.

When I go to the XP PC to disable the HKEY, it's already false. Would you
please tell me how to stop and disable it appropriately?

Thanks Chuck[MVP]!

Stop and Disable the Browser service.

Which HKEY are you talking about? I don't bother with the registry, when
there's another solution.

Chuck[MVP],

Thank you! Appears to work as advertised. Your help is greatly appreciated!

Must say I figured Vista would have plugged and played as easily as my 9x's
& XP's over the years.

Notwithstanding, put me down as one of your "Raving Fans!"

Best Regards,
