ok....here's my problem:

i've got a win2k box (sp4) that seems to want to (at different points
throughout the day) drop/lose the connection to the "server" (nt 4.0 server
box).

because of this, the end user has problems with any open files on the server
at that time.

she had previously been using a different pc.....with same operating
system.....but didn't have this problem.

makes me wonder if there is a setting (or more) that can affect the
connection and make sure these drops do not happen.

the network uses a dsl line, shared on your standard linksys router (not
sure if that enters into the mix...but it is only happening on the one pc).

any thoughts?

thanks!

Check the nic settings and set it at the correct network speed instead of auto if
possible. Otherwise I would suspect a flaky nic, cat5 cable, or port on the switch.
There could be settings in the computers Local Security Policy for security options
that may be different from the other computers such as the settings for "digitally
sign communications" if you want to check those but since it is one computer I would
suspect a physical issue first. Also run ipconfig /all on it to make sure that the
network connection is correct configured to other computers in regards to dns and
wins and also run a full virus scan and parasite scan on it. A bad/flaky power
supply, flaky ram, and overheating CPU on a computer can also cause weird issues
including connectivity. -- Steve
