Depending on your cable modem, it may have a USB connection. If so, unplug
your twisted pair cable from the modem and link your PC and modem with a USB
cable. A new device should be found, and pretty much set itself up. If
you're still having problems, call the cable company back and tell them they
didn't finish the job.

On a side note, if your NIC is built into the motherboard and the board is
more than a year old, it is likely bad. I have yet to see an on-board NIC
last much longer than that. YEMV.

My onboard NIC has been fine for the last 2 years, the previous one was fine
after 5 years

connect a friends computer to your cable and see if you still have the
problem.
If you do then it is the cable company. In the old days when cable
connection
was new most of the time it was the cable company.

With Charter, it still is.

Thanks for all your replies. My network adapter is Intel Pro 100VE original
OEM. How do I tell if it is onboard ? I hate onboard stuff ! This is very
strange, but I changed my homepage to from www.gateway.com to the homepage
provided by cable co and so far (knock on wood) it has not gone down ! I
noticed through Spysweeper that everytime I went to the gateway site the
cookie ' awtola ' was being blocked. I had been using the gateway home page
since 2003 ! Obviously something has changed recently. Whatever works....I
have been beside myself not being able to 'get online' LOL

If you have the PC manual and haven't done any upgrades to it since new,
look in there- it wll tell you if you have onboard NIC or not. Or look at
the back of it- if the network cable plugs in to the same area as your USB
ports, it's onboard. If the cable plugs into one of the expansion slots,
it's an add-on NIC.

I am happy to report that it is NOT my computer...cable co returned today
with a telephone type modem (more expensive), as they have a 'node' problem
in certain areas. This has been going on for approx 1 month (which is when my
problems started). Why it wasn't corrected on first service call is beyond me
! Thanks again for all the info.
