Losing DNS entries

On our network we have a number of networked printers that have DHCP
reservations and workstations connect to them by their DNS name rather than
IP address. this generally works fine - however we are having some issues
where some printers DNS entry is dissapearing from the DNS server and whats
then happening is that the users are unable to print as their printer setup's
are designed to point to the DNS name. They are not losing their network
connection as we have no problem communicating with the printer by it's IP
address and by us adding a manual DNS entry in it fixes the problem - but
then it seems to dissapear again.
to combat this we do use DHCP option 012 - host name which gives the printer
a DNS name of our choice rather than the default name the printers give
themselves.
however this doesn't seem to make a difference.

has anyone got any suggestions as to why DNS would be losing it's entry?

thanks

This does NOT "just happen" so it can be resolved to
one of a few problems quite easily....

There are only two (ok, maybe three) reasons for this:

1) Someone is removing (manual) entries

2) Scanvenging is removing stale (usually dynamic) entries

3) (Part of #2 really) Someone is adding "Delete this record
when it becomes stale" to the PROPERTIES of manual
entries.

Why anyone would ever do #3 is beyond me, but from time to
time we do hear from people who make it a habit.

#2 is natural but should only affect DHCP assigned entries and
for such printers the addresses should be either manual or
DHCP reservations (i.e., static one way or the other) so that
permanent DNS entries can be added manually.

For #1, tell "someone" to STOP DOING THAT or take away
his (DNS) admin privileges.

Ok, I guess there could be a bug in DNS but most of us NEVER
see such problems so I am doubtful about that....
