losing data packets

I use windows XP Home, the AT&T Worldnet ISP Provider,
and Explorer 6.0, and PCTel Micromodem (software
based). I have virtually no problem connecting but
sometimes I lose connectivity although Worldnet status
Icon still shows that I have a connection. I can tell
I've lost connectivity because when I try to go to
another website I get an error that says something
like "action cancelle" or "page not ___?" (don't remember
exact wording). Another way I can tell is if I'm
downloading something the download status bar gets to
halfway and stops. I pinged Google.com and found that
I'm losing packets. Please help!
