Windows XP losing data on conversion

Hi guys/gals can some one help me on a prob I have?
I have a maxtor160GB external and its been formatted with FAT32 and now there are 4500 albums on it in Mp3 mode, my problem is the guy didnt put NTFS on.
converting FAT32 to NTFS will this lose all my data? Any suggestions as I have no way of getting these albums done again.

No, you shouldn't lose the data (although a backup is always recommended). You can't easily go back to FAT32 though.
