Hello everyone...I am hoping someone can help me. I have a home built computer that I bought off of a friend. My OP system is Windows xp Professional, and this computer has 2 hard drives that have been partitioned alot. I have C, D, E, F, G, H, & L. Now I know that there is alot of memory in my computer but my C drive is almost out of memory. I dont have the xp disk to reinstall it, (he forgot to give me that). I see that he has partition magic on one of the drives, but I dont know how to use it. I tried to once and created another drive. I am not sure what is safe to delete on this computer because I dont have any of the disks I need to reinstall some of my stuff (i.e cd rom, burner, dvd....etc.).

Can anyone suggest anything for me to do to move more memory to my c drive without having to delete anything??? I will use the partition magic ...if anyone can walk me thru it

Thanks for your help
Corrie

Just an aside but if you ever need to reinstall XP, what do you plan to do?

In any event, the problem is likely System Restore and or Hibernation; both
of these grow on your hard drive as time goes on. I don't advise turning
off System Restore but you can reduce the amount of space it takes but note,
this will mean fewer older restore points since based on space requirements,
System Restore deletes the oldest restore points first as it needs room for
new ones. To reduce the size of the file store, Open Control Panel, open
System, go to the System Restore tab, click settings, move the slider to the
left to reduce the room it takes on each drive, click apply and ok.

Unless you use Hibernation, you don't need that and it can be turned off.
Open Control Panel, open Display, go to the Screen Saver tab, click the
Power button under Monitor power, remove the check next to Enable
hibernation, click apply and ok.

Please get back with the "friend" to help you..
PS..sure glad I don't have friends like that...

Anyone??

Partition Magic (I assume that you have at least PM 7 or preferably PM
8) can shrink partitions that have too much space, merge partitions and
delete partitions. I'd recommend:

1) Talk to your friend and get the original Windows XP disk, not a copy.
If your friend will not give it to you, you'll need to buy one.
http://www.pricegrabber.com is a good place to shop for good prices.
Remember that to be eligible for the upgrade price you'll need a
qualifying Windows CD.

2) Go into the Partition Magic Start menu and look for the Quick Start
Guide and the User Guide. Read them. PM is fairly easy to use.

3) Shrink, merge, delete and move partitions to make C: bigger.

My preference is to have no more than two partitions per physical hard
drive: C: for installing Windows and all applications; D: for data.

Corrie,

When you say MEMORY, are you talking about FREE DISK SPACE or RANDOM ACCESS
MEMORY? I imagine it's probably free space because he has your disks
patitioned into too many small pieces. You will have to find someone who is
familiar with Partition Magic to help you.

As to what you can do if you ever need to reinstall XP, you will probably
have to do what most other people do, they buy it. But, if you have a
previous version of Win98 or WinME, you can get the XP Home Upgrade at
places like Best Buy or CompUSA for less than $100.

Good luck,

Tom

If all you want to do is free up some disk space, uninstall some of the programs on your C:\ drive and re-install the
to one of your other partitions. Be sure to save your data before doing so. I'll bet that most of your programs installed themselves to C:\Program Files\..., and that is takin
up space. Use the install wizards to direct them to another drive. The other suggestions you got are also good ideas: reduce space allotted to system restore
internet files and don't forget the Recycle Bin. By default, it reserves 10% of all your drive(s) space. Right-click on that icon and choose "properties" and
reconfigure it. You could also move your swap file (Virtual Memory) to one of your emptier partitions
The bottom line is, re-partitoning your drive will not free up any space, it only moves space around
