loses DNS connection randomly

Windows 2000, this has been an ongoing issue for the past couple of months.
My computer seems to lose connection to the DNS randomly, and then it can't
access anything unless by direct IP address.

I've found a workaround which is to run the "ipconfig /registerdns" command.
However this is a workaround, need to get at the underlying problem.

I've noticed that from time to time that the little connection icon shows
that the connection goes down (cable down) for a split second and then comes
back again. After that the DNS is hosed until I rerun the ipconfig command.

Your problem is almost surely related to the network dropouts. Check the
usual suspects - bad NIC, bad cabling, switches or hubs or routers dropping
the connection and so on.

I've been trying to find some way to debug this for some time now. I've just
switched it from one Ethernet port of the router to another port, and it's
still happening. Now that still doesn't prove anything, because it could
just mean that the whole router is having some kind of problem with the data
stream, and not just any single one of its ports. The distances involved
here, between the router and the PC, would be no more than 3m (10ft) so I
can't see even the worst cables being too much of an issue, but I'll try
switching the cables.

Anyone hear of any kind of problems with Dlink routers, especially regarding
their wireline connectivity?
