Lose internet connection when used USB device

If I connect a USB device (USB hard drive, pendrive) I then find that the net
connection (broadband) ceases to work. It appears to be active and Device
Manager shows the modem as working properly, but nothing come down the line.
The USB hubs are also working properly.

If I disconnect, I can't reconnect and have to reboot. I've tried putting
another USB device in and Safely Removing it - no joy.

Prsumably this is a USB problem. Any ideas about what I can do to cure it?

You may have a clash between the interrupts used for the USB
device and the network adapter. Check your Event Viewer.

Thanks, Pegasus - I've looked at the Event Viewer but I'm not sure what I'm
looking for. Will a relevant message include, say 'USB'?

There's an Error in System - 'The server
{F3A614DC-ABE0-11D2-A441-00C04F795683} did not register with DCOM within the
required timeout' Is this the one? If so - so what should I do?
