Lose connection to internet after installing ASW

When I install MS-ASW I immediately lose my connection to
the internet. I can Restore to a couple of days ago. I've
tried it twice. Any suggestions?

Did you really mean:

When I install MS-ASW and scan my machine and remove spyware and reboot

I lose my connection?

That is quite a bit different from "I install MS-ASW and immediately lose my
connection."

If the former, please use the fix outlined in this KB article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892350

If you really mean that just installing kills your Internet connection, can
you then scan in safe mode at least twice, until the machine is clean. Then
restart in normal mode, and apply the fix in that KB article and write back
and tell us where you are?

I had this problem, this is what cured mine. Go to
Start/Run and type in cmd . In command type the
following: netsh Winsock reset and then re-boot. Good
luck... Gizmo.

Thanks Ron,
I ran Ad-Aware and Spybot first, then installed MS-ASW,
this time successfully. After running ASW, Spybot still
picks out (and can not permanently delete) New.Net, DSO
Exploit, and eGroup. I assume MS will be working on those?

I meant the latter. I successfully installed ASW on my 3rd
attempt... I ran Ad-Aware and Spybot first.

But thanks for your suggestions.

Let me see if I can learn from this one--it sounds like you are saying that
your machine was infected in such a way that adding Microsoft Antispyware to
the mix was too much for it, and it interfered with Internet connectivity,
just by being installed and running real-time protection?

And cleaning beforehand, with Ad-aware and Spybot Search & destroy enabled
you to install and run the program without ill effects?

Forget DSO--it's not real. new.net should be removable via the control
panel, add or remove programs, or, via their web site (yes, this is supposed
to be safe!) Microsoft Antispyware also seems to remove it, but it may take
two passes in safe mode. eGroup isn't something I know one way or another
about. In general, if Microsoft Antispyware identifies something, but
doesn't seem to be able to clean it, trying in safe mode may help, but is
not a panacea. A Tools, suspected spyware report from an infected system is
useful, if that function works on your system.

Yes.
I'm not quite sure why the first 2 installs failed and the
3rd succeeded. I do habitually update & run Ad-Aware &
Spybot every few days. However, before the 3rd try I did
look at Spybot's Tools and Settings and I may have
unchecked a couple of suspects in System Startup. "Popnav"
may have been one of them. I did also run HijackThis
before the 3rd try, did not "fix" anything, but did save
the log. I suppose I could run it again now and compare
logs...

If there is a particular critter that prevents an install, this is clearly
knowing precise details would help a lot--we don't want that to be possible.
But I wouldn't worry too much about it if it seems the trail is
lost--thanks!

Hmm. I meant to say that knowing precise details would help--not sure what
thought I was revising when that went out!
