Loosing Internet Connectivity

Vista Home Premium keeps dropping my internet connection. It happens every
day and it happens two or three times a day. Before I bought Vista I was
running XP SP2 on this machine and I never had problems with it. I have two
other computers on my network. One runs XP and the other is a Mac. Neither of
them have internet connectivity issues - only my Vista machine, and only
since I started running Vista on it.

I use the sleep button on my keyboard when I'm finished using my computer.
When I wake it back up, the internet usually works for about ten minutes,
then I loose the connection. All applications loose their connection to the
net - browsers, gmail notifier, uTorrent...everything.

I have tried the Diagnose and Repair feature, but I get a message that says
"Cannot communicate with www.microsoft.com(207.46.192.254). Network
diagnostics pinged the remote host but did not receive a response." Then it
gives me the option to "Reset the network adapter "Wireless Network
Connection". I click that, it goes through a "Repairing" process, then it
says "Windows tried to repair but the problem still exists."

I have also tried going to the command line and doing "ipconfig /renew", but
that didn't help either.

It's strange, because if I hover my house over the network icon in my
taskbar, the tray that slides up says "Access: Local and Internet". And when
I go to Network and Sharing Center, at the top it shows graphics of my
computer connecting to my network, connecting to the internet. There are no
red X's anywhere. As far as Vista networking is concerned, I'm still
connected to the net.

Please, please, please. I need suggestions on things I can try to solve
this. The only thing I've found that temporarily resolves it is rebooting my
computer, which is especially annoying since Vista takes so long get up and
running again when you restart.

Thanks,
Dustin

Hi Dustin,

Did you install Vista using upgrade media or did you use the full version?
If you used the upgrade version then please refer to my post 'Clean Install
Windows Vista Using Upgrade Media' in the newsgroup 'Windows Vista
Installation and Setup' for detailed instructions on how to use upgrade media
to clean install.

Hi Barb and Dwarf. Thanks for the suggestions.

Barb, I waited until the problem occurred again and, sure enough, when I did
an ipconfig /all the default gateway was missing. I rebooted and went to that
site you gave me and installed the patch, but unfortunately it didn't seem to
solve the problem. I installed the patch last night, yet I lost my connection
to the net when I went to use my workstation this morning. Actually it's
weird, I'm online now (obviously) and I just did the command and the default
gateway is missing now too.

Dwarf, when I installed Vista I did a clean install, not an upgrade. I
formatted my OS partition and started from scratch.

Thanks,
Dustin

I'd like to see the complete text output of

ipconfig /all run from an elevated cmd prompt.

What are you connecting to? A router? which one and does it have the
latest firmware? You can also try unchecking IPv6 in the properties
for the connection.

I'd also strongly suggest disabling utorrent completely to see if
this issue disappears. it's known to cause connection issues (see
http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/05/01/utorrent-17-beta-free-download-for-windows-vista-support/
)

Hi Barb,

Thanks for taking the time to write back. I'm connected through a Linksys
wireless G router. I realize how easy it's going to be to go "aha! that's his
problem", but again I never had this problem when I was using XP. Also The
other two machines in my house (XP, and Mac OSX) have zero connectivity
issues. To me, that makes Vista sound like the culprit. Either that or there
might be a driver issue with my NIC. If I look in Device Manager, I have
three network adapters listed:

Linksys Wireless-G PCI Adapter
Marvell Yukon PCI Gigabit Ethernet Controller
nVIDIA nForce Networking Controller

I think the Marvell is the built-in NIC on my motherboard, and the
nVIDIA...I don't know what that is. I have an nVIDIA graphics card, it
doesn't have a network interface on it.

Out of the three, I only use is the Linksys, so I guess I could disable the
other two. I'm actually running Windows Update now (which I do often) and
there just so happened to be updates for the Marvell and the nVIDIA NICs. I
don't know how or why that would help me since I'm using the Linksys, but I'm
doing it. I'll see if I can find a newer driver for the Linksys as well.

I have no problem giving you the text output of an ipconfig /all, but I
don't want to post it on a public forum. What is a secure way for me to get
it to you?

Thanks,
Dustin

first, everyone posts ipconfig /all outputs here in this forum. not
sure what you think is a security risk.

second, go ahead and disable the NICs you are not using

third, Vista has a new network stack. things ARE different.

fourth, many vendors have new firmware for various routers that fix
various issues with Vista. issues that never appeared with other
operating systems. which Linksys router, model and hardware
revision? what version firmware are you using? is it the latest
firmware?

fifth, what does device manager show for power management settings
for the wireless card? make sure it is not set to allow...to turn
off this device to save power.

Hi Barb,

Thanks again. My Router is a Linksys WRT54GL Wireless G. It's listed on
Linksys' website as being a Vista-friendly router:

http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Sate...146109&pagename=Linksys/Common/VisitorWrapper

I updated the firmware on it, so we'll see if that does the trick.

I also disabled those other two NICs. And I rarely use uTorrent (maybe once
or twice a month?), so I seriously doubt if that's the issue.

I'll let you know if the firmware update resolved the issue. As far as me
putting my ipconfig /all readout on here, I just don't feel comfortable
putting that information on a public forum. I have absolutely no idea if
someone could use that information to do something malicious to my computer.
I'm not trying to be difficult, just cautious. Is being cautious such a bad
thing?

Regards,
Dustin

thanks for the update. hopefully the firmware upgrade will solve all

Hi Barb,

Unfortunately none of the driver updates I've performed have solved the
issue. Vista continues to drop my internet connection after a few minutes,
once I bring my machine out of sleep mode. I fail to understand why this is
happening since my NIC is listed as a Vista-friendly device.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Regards,
Dustin Brown

one way to rule out the router and the PCI wireless card being the
issue is to disconnect the LAN for a test and connect the problem
computer directly to the broadband modem (be sure to turn the
windows firewall on) via Ethernet to see if you have the same issue.
I don't recall that you ever posted the ipconfig I asked for and
unfortunately, without this info in full, I'm unable to suggest
anything else.

Do you have a Netgear WGR614 router? And, if so, is it WGR614v8? I had
WGR614v7 and WGR614v6 and both of them had this problem. WGR614v8 solved it.
Fred

Well, if all of the other things you have done so far don't solve the
problem, consider updating the firmware of the router. Or, depending on the
"age" of the router, consider purchasing something new. I can vouch for
Netgear WGR614v8 which solved the problem you are having after sleep mode,
and also hibernation.

Fred

Thanks, Fred. About two months ago I replaced my older model Linksys Wireless
G router with the newer model I have now so that I would have access to WPA2
security. New wireless routers aren't cheap, so I'm not likely to go out and
replace it any time soon. Also, my router is listed as a Vista-friendly
device on the Linksys website. I see no reason why I should have to replace
the one I have. I don't have the money to spend on trial and error, process
of elimination, replacing hardware until everything works well in Vista. Who
does? And even if one did have that kind of money, who would want to deal
with that mess? Thank you for the suggestion though, I do appreciate it.

I've tried all of the basic stuff.

1) I've made sure that all of my hardware is Vista-friendly (it is)
2) I've made sure all of my drivers are updated (they are)
3) I've run the recommended Vista patch which is supposed to fix some nutty
gateway issue.

The only thing I know of that helps sometimes, but not all the time, is if
when I bring my computer out of sleep mode I do an ipconfig /all command.
That seems help me keep my internet connection most of the time. But how weak
is it that I have to do that every time? Seriously.

I'm obviously annoyed. This is actually the first operating system I've
purchased on it's own. It didn't come with my computer, my employer didn't
buy it for me, it isn't a business write off. I just bought it on good faith
because I thought it was really going to be great. I've been running it for
months, accepting every update the OS offers me, and I can't even do
something as simple as maintain an internet connection with it. How lame is
that? And I can't blame my computer or network because, again, Win XP and
Apple OSX have zero problems maintaining a connection on my network.

My 90-day period is up so I would have to pay $60 to get one of Microsoft's
support people to even talk to me. I feel like I'm stuck with a faulty
product made by a company that wants me to pay them more money so they can
MAYBE help me fix their broken product. Either that or I I have to roll back
to XP sp2, which I know for a fact will work perfectly. That's a pretty lame
solution though. Vista's the new OS and I payed for it. I want to use it. I
WANT to like it. But that's hard to do when I have a problem doing something
as rudimentary as getting on the net, and my only two remaining options are
shelling out more money for a possible solution or admitting defeat. Vista
wasn't cheap. Why should I have to pay them more so they can help me fix
their stuff?

I've been maintaining this thread for a while, and folks like yourself and
Barb have been kind enough to try and give me some good suggestions. I can't
tell you how much I appreciate everyone's help. Unfortunately none of it has
solved the problem I'm having with Vista. So where do I go from here?
Spending money to replace hardware until everything works isn't an option,
nor should anyone expect it to be. That's just asinine and presumptuous.

Not only that, but even if I were inclined to shell out sixty bones for tech
support (which I'm definitely not) I have serious doubts as to whether they
would even be able to help me. The issue I'm having is sporadic at best. I
have no way of reproducing it on command. I wake my computer up and sometimes
my connection to the net lasts five minutes, sometimes fifteen minutes,
sometimes I don't loose it at all. How's a tech support guy supposed to help
me with that? Have you ever had a problem with your car, so you took it to
the mechanic and the car ran fine when the mechanic looked at it, but the
minute you got it home it started acting up again? Same thing here.

One last comment. Linksys lists every product they manufacture as
Vista friendly on the page you referenced. That apparently does not
mean that it was tested by Microsoft and the way it is worded, it
would seem that Linksys is the authority behind the words "Vista

actually submitted for official compatibility testing at

Barb,
I am having the identical problem. My ISP has spent at least 4 hours on the
phone with me trying to help. I had the ISP convinced that it was his
problem but after going through all of the trouble shooting, they are sure it
is not their problem.

I bought a new Sony VGC -Lt15E desktop and Vista came prelaoded. I have
been working to resolve this problem since 12/05/07. I had an older Sony
with Windows
XP hooked to this same ISP through the same DSL modem and had no problems.

I was almost convinced that my only option was to return my machine to Best
Buy for a refund and or replacement. However, after reading this Blog I see
a glimer of hope. What is the Windows Vista team saying about this problem???
I have been sending problem log reports to windows daily. I hope they are
reading them and working on a solution.

is technically identical.

I have read this string and I would like to note that I am also losing
internet connectivity after a period of being online. (same problem as Dustin)

I am using a Dell 1720 laptop with Vista Home Premium. I have an Intel 4965
agn network card (latest drvers installed - 15.0.32).

I have a linksys wrt150n router (firmware 1.01.9).

I connect thru the wired port using a Win XP SP2 computer w/o problems. I
also connect wirelessly via a laptop using Win XP Pro w/o connectivity
problems.

I am using 128 bit WEP encryption in the linksys router.

Once I do the ipconfig /all I will post the info.

Any ideas what is going on? It is frustrating to not hold an internet
connection. I usually have to reboot to get the connection again. I have
also deselected the option to turn off the network card to save power. I
have also played with turning off the IPv6 option, but that did not help.

Thanks in advance!
Robin
